About us

A therapist performing myofascial trigger point therapy on a woman lying on her back.

Still in pain after trying everything? You aren't imagining it, and you aren't out of options.

Most chronic pain doesn't actually originate where it hurts. Often, the root cause is a "trigger point"—a tight, hyper-contracted knot of muscle that refers pain to entirely different parts of your body.

If you have spent years trying standard physical therapy, stretching, medication or even surgery without lasting relief, it is likely because those methods are treating the symptom, not the source.

At MYO Pain Relief, we specialize in finding and eliminating the precise root of your pain so you can get your life back, pain free and fully functional!

ORIGINS

Clinic director Sharon Sauer, LMT, CMTPT has been practicing and teaching myofascial trigger point therapy for decades. Her work is deeply informed by her years assisting Dr. Janet G. Travell and Dr. David Simons in their treatment and training programs.

Dr. Janet Travell (1901–1997) was an American physician, heart surgeon, researcher, and educator who revolutionized our understanding of musculoskeletal pain. She is best known for her discovery and mapping of myofascial trigger points—those tight, tender knots in muscle tissue that can refer pain to distant areas in the body.

Dr. David Simons was an American physician and U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel who went on to a distinguished career in academic medicine as an instructor at the VA Medical Center, Long Beach, California.

Together, Travell and Simons co-authored what is considered a breakthrough, foundational text in pain management: Travell & Simons’ The Trigger Point Manual, originally released in 1983. Both Janet Travell and David Simons have authored hundreds of published articles which have appeared in journals and publications on subjects such as: pharmacology, neurology, rheumatology, cardiology, internal medicine, housework and popular subjects, and industrial seating design. Some are listed here.

Travell also made history as the first female White House physician, treating President John F. Kennedy for chronic back pain. Thanks to her clinical skill, JFK was able to manage debilitating symptoms and continue his work as a national leader.
